Free Trees Available for Maryland’s ‘Backyard Buffers’ The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is offering free tree seedlings to landowners statewide who have a creek, drainage ditch, stream, or other waterway on or near their property through the Backyard Buffers program, now available in 23 counties. In Montgomery County, you can request a tree to be planted, or you can plant shade trees for free. For the first week of the application period, applications from Equity Focus Areas of the county (outlined in red on the map below) will be given priority.
